Web site for a non-profit organization to improve accessibility for audiences around the world.

Background

The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) is a humanitarian NGO that provides technical training, consulting and acts as a centre of expertise in water and sanitation for developing countries and the poor.

The organization's existing web site was inaccessible, confusing and was not communicating information as efficiently as it could. CAWST hired Strut to standardize its web site, render it more useable to a broader audience, and improve CAWST’s ability to maintain the site in the future.

Strut’s Solution

Strut designed a fully functional web site based on an open-source content management system. The site is designed to be accessible to low-bandwidth users and to various levels of literacy. It uses a clear, simple navigation system so that users can easily find their way around the site. A custom course registration back-end was developed by Strut to handle the large number of training program registrations which were previously processed manually.

Results

The web site launched at the end of June 2006, and many new functions have been phased in since. Having established this look and feel for the web site, Strut was also asked to roll out this identity for the organization as a whole.

Simple navigation and a low-bandwidth approach ensure the site is accessible to people around the world, especially in areas with unreliable internet infrastructure.
A registration system was developed allowing members to register for training programs online.
