Background

Shell Canada is committed to achieving and demonstrating sustainable development in all their operations. Their annual Sustainable Development report describes Shell’s economic, environmental and social performance, highlighting their efforts to address the sustainability concerns of its operations. 

Strut's Solution

For the past five years, Strut has worked with Shell not only to design these reports to visually support its overarching commitments, but has also worked closely with the Shell SD team in the early development stages to assist in determining the most effective ways of presenting the information. These efforts for the 2006 report resulted in a design and content approach that would offer a leaner, sleeker, more user friendly presentation of the content in order to increase readership.

Strut utilized an editorial approach to the design, relying on magazine style page formats with emphasis on shorter reading supportive sidebars and a more browsable approach to content. 

Results

The completed product is unique to reports of this nature within the industry, offering a less technical and text heavy document. The new design accomplished its goals of easier reading, better access to information and overall readability of articles, charts and images.
